<p>For the one-hour student orientations at the Chemistry &amp; Chemical Engineering Library:</p>

<li>I wrote a <a href="http://jeffloo.com/stuff/2010/instruction/orientation/chemlibguide2010.pdf">library guidebook</a> explaining how to use the library and the reasons for it.  Additionally, the guide outlines the chemical information resources available &#8211; with flow charts for finding these sources.</li>
<li>Because details on library use is available via the guidebook, more class time was granted for an ice breaker game (<a href="http://www.jeffloo.com/stuff/2010/instruction/orientation/human-bingo.pdf">human bingo</a>) and a discussion on tips for academic success at Berkeley.</li>
<li>To reinforce student learning, an online <a href="http://www.jeffloo.com/stuff/2010/instruction/orientation/Chemistry%20Library%20Orientation%20Quiz%202010.htm">library quiz</a> was developed where participants had a chance of winning a $50 gift certificate to the Cal Student Store.</li>

<p>PURPOSE: Provide a presentation to LBNL Library introducing <a href="http://www.cdlib.org/services/d2d/ucelinks/">UC-eLinks</a> -the University of California’s SFX link resolver service.</p>
<p>TOPICS DISCUSSED:</p>
<ol>
<li>The purpose of link resolvers is to connect readers from citations to full-text materials in an automated fashion.</li>
<li>UC-eLinks guides readers to full-text access via different pathways, including the following actions:
<ul>
<li>directing readers to electronic, full-text materials;</li>
<li>searching library catalogs for the availability of resources; and</li>
<li>initiating interlibrary loan requests.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Beginning with a citation source, the UC-eLinks workflow continues through OpenURLs, link resolver processes, and user selection of services before opening the final target.</li>
<li>The installation and development of UC-eLinks is overseen by the California Digital Library and co-managed by UC campus libraries.</li>
<li>LBNL Library has several options for developing link resolver services, so a decision-making and planning framework is proposed that outlines the benefits and limitations of each option.</li>

<p>PURPOSE: To characterize LBNL research and to determine whether it corresponds to the subject expertise of the UC Berkeley Library.</p>
<p>AUDIENCE: UC Berkeley Librarians</p>
<p>METHOD:</p>
<ol>
<li>A content analysis of the LBNL website (<a href="http://www.lbl.gov">http://www.lbl.gov</a>) identified research organizations and programs at the Berkeley Lab and their corresponding research themes, disciplines, and subject areas.</li>
<li>This information was entered into a Microsoft Access database.</li>
<li>Relationships were assigned between the research disciplines and the subject expertise of the subject specialty libraries of the UC Berkeley Library.</li>
</ol>
<p>RESULTS:</p>
<ul>
<li>The subject expertise of the Science Libraries and the Environmental Design Library corresponds to the research conducted at LBNL.</li>
<li><strong>LBNL research was characterized by</strong> 6 research themes, which divide into 35 research disciplines and subsequently divide into 486 research subjects.  There were 79 research centers and research programs at LBNL counted.</li>
<li>A Microsoft Access <strong>database was created</strong> (here is the <a href="http://jeffloo.com/stuff/2010/LBNL-subjects-db-er-diagram.png">ER diagram</a>).</li>
<li>Reports can be generated showing the relationship between:
<ul>
<li>Research themes, disciplines, and subjects</li>
<li>Research programs and entities at LBNL</li>
<li>Subject specialty libraries at UC Berkeley Library</li>
</ul>
